On The Clouds
It is amazing how clouds look, very fluffy but also very put together, if you didn’t know anything about them you’d think you can jump on them, you’d think they catch you if you fall. I am a good distance above the bed of clouds at this moment. I have always thought reading a book while flying was the best, I was right and writing while flying comes in second.
My time off is over, I have got my share of fun for this summer. New York was a good experience, it is a very entertaining city, but also very crowded, stimulating and anxiety inducing. My intention was not entertainment and exploration it was really to spend time with my brother, but I ended up with a piece of every pie. I think the time I spent with him in those three days trumps the time I spent with him my entire life. He has always been very close to my heart but often not up-to-date with my life especially since he moved to the U.K.
I am so used to seeing Trevor Noah on screen, I watch his show every morning over breakfast, I am so used to it that even when he was right there in front of me, I still watched him on the the screens more than looking at him in person. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is something else all together, I would happily wait in that line for four hours again to get in next time I am in NYC. His band is so good, and they fill up all the buffer time so it is like a concert within the show. The stand-up comedian who warms up the audience before the show does high quality comedy, and by that I mean he does not rely on not taking the easy route of making jokes by offending other people, or the classic, sex jokes, not denying how funny they are, but it is so easy to make people laugh if you’re explicit.
Hamilton was there in my head the entire time. That musical is a masterpiece, my obsession phase was over two years ago, but it was never really over. I got to see another Broadway musical, Waitress. I am not going to compare it to Hamilton, that’s unfair, actually that is why it is not very popular, it came out at around the same time as Hamilton, and oh well, that’s some tough luck. Waitress is the story of a woman who makes the best pies in town working at a diner and navigating her life with her friends’ support and dealing with her abusive husband. She discovers she is pregnant at the beginning, unwilling to lose to the child, yet un-wanting of its existence in this miserable life she has, she decides to keep it. I felt strange at some point by how the characters that are portrayed in the story as good were cheating on their partners and there was not a big conflict depicted there, granted, one of those partners was abusive and we can compare those two faults and being abusive I would assume wins this round of “what is worse?”, but it still doesn’t take “having an affair” off the top third of the list of things you do not want to do to your partner, and I wondered if this is yet another thing on its way of normalized or if this is just an anomaly. It was great though, I did cry at one song, but I always cry so it does not mean it will touch other people too.
Stardust is a pretty unique diner where the staff performs songs between serving tables, they are all in New York trying to pursue a professional career in singing and they often do perform in shows and musicals. It is a pretty good experience, the food is pretty good but my least favorite bite is the one this diner takes out of your wallet.
Three days isn’t enough time to teach your mind not to race, especially in a city where everything else seems to be racing too, which reminds me of one joke on Third Rock From The Sun “Why do they call it the human race? It is not like someone wins at the end”.
