The End of the Start of October
I have searched and searched for the best system that will enable me to be most productive and most efficient. I constantly have this feeling inside me that I am not fulfilling my potential and that I could be doing more, doing better, in everything, if only I wasn't distracted. You might be thinking something like "c'mon give yourself a break." Oh believe me, I give myself plenty! guilt free ones too, it isn't about doing more all the time (but feel free to shit on capitalism anytime), the reason for my dissatisfaction is not that I don't work enough, it is that for the most part I am not intentional with my time and energy, I am not present.
Now, let me set one thing straight while we are just starting off, I want you to manage your expectations. this blog post is not about the answer. I have not found an answer, instead I found out that there is no answer. Disappointing, huh? well, not for me. The reason I am constantly searching is that I am constantly changing. I try a bunch of things, tools, routines etc sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and when it works it does so only temporarily, which is frustrating to me sometimes, but if you flip the coin it is also exciting because I feel like it is a journey, my journey to find what works for me, how to optimize my performance given the environment I am in.
Put in those words, I actually know what exactly excites me about coming up with new productivity tools and habits to try, why writing down a new way to schedule the day brings my energy levels up, as weird as it may sound. It is problem solving! Problem: I am not satisfied with my level of focus. Solving: here are some things to try. I am not excited by the answer, I am excited by the process.
What brought this to my attention are the authors of Make Time, Knapp and Zeratsky, in that hot productivity book they wrote many tactics to try and take control of your time, so many I actually lost track, but at the end of they say it's all about experimenting with your time; observe, try something, measure, repeat. and it clicked then that what gets me excited about productivity tools; apps, routines, books, podcasts etc is that they introduce me to new ways I can experiment with.
When I finished that book I started another one, called Show Your Work, which is actually the reason of this blog post, but is not the topic of it. I plan to write a blog post every week talking about what I learned that week, sharing what I think is sharable and might be valuable, it is not a promise that it will be, to anyone, but I will be the documentarian of my own process and if it doesn't bring value to anyone else but me, it will still bring value to the world because I am part of the world. Now I will leave you with this quote
"Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is more people who have come alive" – Howard Thurman.
