American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road by Nick Bilton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Holy shit, what a fucking ride! I'll need to calm down a little bit for a half-decent review.
Ross Ulbricht is a regular guy, and in the span of few years his life steadily, at a staggering pace, got as far from regular as it can get. This is a narration of a true story of how a young man, a Physics M.S., of all things, founded and operated an online store for drugs, guns and various restricted items, The Silk Road.
Nick Bilton's dedication to telling a complete story astounds me, he includes Ross, his girlfriend, and law enforcement officers who all took part in the story one way or another. The book starts from a separate point with each character, converging into one point in time, then diverging into separate paths again. The story telling captivating to say the least, my heart raced near the end.
My favorite character in this book is Gary, the IRS agent. He immediately became my favorite when it was said that "he reads everything three times.". I am awed by such work-ethic and dedication.
The audio book narration by Will Damron is phenomenal. I have to say he did the story justice. I highly recommend this book, in paper or audio form for anyone interested in non-fiction true crime.
